Chestnut seedlings after two seasons of growth in Muhlenberg County, KY, on fertilized, ripped, reclaimed mined land with a weathered, brown sandstone substrate. The seedlings were established by direct seeding, mulched with black plastic and protected from voles with aluminum cylinders.
